During the late Meiji period and the Taisho period (ca.1900-1925),
Kagurazaka was one of the busiest entertainment centers of Tokyo
known as the Yamate Ginza. In particular, the Bishamonten Buddhist
image at the Zenkokuji Temple was a focus of worship among the
common people, stimulating Kagurazaka's growth as a town around
the temple's front gate. Since the geography of the area also
features many slopes, many of them are still paved in cobblestone
as they were in the neighborhood in earlier times. If you walk
through these narrow streets, you'll pass fences made of black
boards with the sound of shamisen performances coming from behind.
Many visitors come to Kagurazaka in search of this sort of atmosphere,
as this is an area with a number of establishments where many
people engaged in cultural activities have been patronizing.
